Cattedrale di San Giustino Traditional Cache

Come primo cache della città di Chieti, la nostra città, non potevamo che scegliere San Giustino.

La Cattedrale è il complesso monumentale più rilevante della provincia di Chieti. Nel luogo si sono sovrapposti diversi edifici religiosi nel corso dei secoli; le prime costruzioni pare si possano far risalire all’epoca paleocristiana ma solo nel corso del 1600 prende le forme odierne. Gli spazi interni vengono definiti sul finire dell’800 in stile tardo barocco mentre le modifiche conclusive della facciata in chiave medioevale dal 1920 per mano di Guido Cirilli. La pianta della basilica si presenta a tre navate con transetto e un presbiterio che accoglie la cripta. Le volte interne sono a calotta e nella cupola centrale si aprono sei lucernari. Lo spazio interno è dominato dall’altare maggiore in marmo policromo con ornamenti lignei. Nello spazio dell’altare si trova L’acclamazione di San Giustino a vescovo dell’artista napoletano Giuseppe Sammartino. L’opera, di grande respiro barocco, mette in mostra l’espressione meravigliata e timorosa del Santo che si oppone all’ansia del popolo che lo vuole Vescovo. All’imponenza dell’altare si contrappone la cripta: piùsemplice e romanica. Caratterizzata da navate irregolari, volte a crociera con archi a sesto acuto dove sono collocati degli affreschi. L’altare e l’ampio presbiterio sono ricoperti da una calotta dove si trovano due grandi finestroni che inondano l’area dell’abside.

As first cache in Chieti, our hometown, we could not choose anything but Saint Giustino Cathedral.

The Cathedral is the most important monumental complex in the province of Chieti. Several religious buildings have been superimposed over the centuries; the first buildings seem to date back to the Early Christian period but only in the course of 1600 it takes current shape. The interior spaces are defined at the end of the 19th century in late Baroque style while the definitive changes of the medieval facade of the 1920s by Guido Cirilli. The  plant has three naves with transept and a presbytery that hosts the crypt. The internal vaults are covered and six skylights open in the central dome. The interior space is dominated by the altarpiece of polychrome marble with wooden ornaments. In the space of the altar is the acclamation of Saint Giustino bishop of the Neapolitan artist Giuseppe Sammartino. The work, of great baroque style, shows the marvelous and timorous expression of the saint who opposes the anxiety of the people who want him as Bishop. The magnificity of the altar is contrasted by the crypt: simpler and Romanesque. It is characterized by irregular aisles, cruise lines with six-pointed arches where frescoes are placed. The altar and the large presbytery are covered by a vault where there are two large windows crossing the apse area.
