Mr. M. M. Dean, specialist with the Mississippi Extention Service, asked the ladies of the Oktoc Garden Club to call together the families of the community to organize a club to promote the social and recreational life of the members, as well as serve as an instrument to provide the farming community with educational and research data in agriculture. Although it now has less focus on agriculture, the club has met every month since it's beginning.
1) There is a sign located near the northwestern corner of the property stating " OKTOC COMMUNITY CLUB THE OLDEST IN MISSISSIPPI". What is the date the club was established? This date is also found on a pedestrian gate located along Oktoc Rd.
The large section of the main building was once Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The land and building were deeded to Oktoc Community Club when the church closed. This section serves as the meeting room and has an "old country church" atmosphere. Portable wooden pews still provide seating and there is a low stage in the front. The smaller section of the building was once a one room schoolhouse. It was located on a hill to the northern area of the property. This section was rolled, using logs, from the original location and is now the kitchen and dining area containing eating tables with benches for seating and a long serving table.
2) There is a piece of artwork known as a "quilt" attached to the main building. It depicts a barn scene. What are the five colors (or shades of these colors) used in this artwork?
A more modern red metal building replaced a wooden shed that had served as a BBQ/stew cooking area for special functions. It contains a large brick cooking pit and gas lines for burners to be used with large cast iron stew pots. Outdoor tables and chairs are also stored inside.
3) A sign is attached on this building above the porch roof. What year was this building erected and by the courtesy of what group?
An old roadbed traverses the property. This is Old Robinson Road and connected Columbus, MS and Jackson, MS. In Columbus, Robinson Rd. joined Andrew Jackson's Military Road from Nashville, TN. Robinson Rd. drew much southwest heading traffic away from the Natchez Trace.
4) A sign along the southern edge of the property marks this roadbed. What is the date on this sign and the three listed uses of this route?
My grandparents were founding members of the club and my father was a charter member as a child. My son is presently serving as president. He is the first 4th generation member to serve in that position. I grew up on a dairy/beef farm (Oak-Ayr Farms) with the farmhouse and dairy located one-half mile south of the club. I now live on the beef farm portion five miles north of here. Both operations were family owned and operated. The dairy closed in 1998, but I am still a beef producer. I spent many years on Oktoc Rd. transferring farm tractors/equipment/cattle thru the area.
I hope you have enjoyed your ride in the country.
