Geocache Description:

In 1867 the corner stone of the historic St. Joseph Church was laid. Just one year later, the structure on a hill would be one of the few buildings left standing after what would later be named the "Black Friday" flood. On Friday, July 24, 1868 the Town of Sykesville was devestated by a flood that would continue down to Baltimore where over 50 lives would be lost. With reports of 18 inches of rain in 30 minutes, eye witnesses claimed that a 20 foot wall of water slolomed down the Patapsco River. Remarkebly, no deaths were reported in Sykesville during this harrowing morning.

At the time of the flood, most of the buildings of Sykesville were located on the south banks of the Patapsco in Howard County. That is where the namesake of Sykesville, James Sykes, had watched his hotel wash away with the rail road.

To get credit for this cache, post a picture in your log looking south over the river from the top steps of the historic church.

Free parking is available in one of the many town public parking lots.
