Geocache Description:

- There is adequate room to pull off the road in front of the cache location. Be mindful, though, not to wander back onto the highway! - Try not to visit the cache on Sunday mornings. The neighboring Hosanna Church may use this location for parking. - DO NOT walk beyond the barrier posts! This may draw the unwanted attention of the campus police. - In order to claim your find, see instructions in the description below.

- Originally established as The Ashmun Institute, Lincoln University received its charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on 29 April 1854, making it the nation's first degree-granting historically black college and university. As Horace Mann Bond, Lincoln's first African American and it's eighth president, so eloquently cites in the opening chapter of his book, Education for Freedom, this was "the first institution found anywhere in the world to provide a higher education in the arts and sciences for male youth of African descent."

- The story of Lincoln University dates back to the early years of the nineteenth century and to the ancestors of its founders, John Miller Dickey and his wife. In October 1853, the Presbytery of New Castle approved Dickey's plan for the establishment "an institution to be called Ashmun Institute, for the scientific, classical and theological education of colored youth of the male sex."

- The institution was re-named Lincoln University in 1866 in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. - You will find a further history of Lincoln University at https://www.lincoln.edu/about/history.html.

- The arch before you was erected by the Alumni Association in 1921. The plaque on the left speaks to this. The plaque on the right reads: "Dedicated to the Lincoln University Xxx xxx xxxxxx Xxxxx Xxxxxxx xx xxx Xxxxx Xxx".
