Geocache Description:

Description:
The Vulcan statue, representing the Roman god of the fire and forge, was created to represent Birmingham, Alabama at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. Measuring over 56 feet tall, it is the world's largest cast iron statue, made up of 100,000 pounds of iron.

The park and museum are open most every day throughout the year from 10:00am - 6:00pm, and open some evenings from 6:00pm-10:00pm. Fees range from $3.00-6.00 to go through the museum and observation tower. Check the website www.visitvulcan.com for more details and rules.

To receive credit for this cache, all "Required" questions must be answered and sent to me via the Geocache Messaging tool. Photos should be left in your "Found it" log. PLEASE do not post photos that give away an answer. Any photos giving away answers will be removed. All of the questions can be answered without having to pay admission to the museum or observation tower. But I have added a "Bonus" question if you do decide to go to the top!

I hope you enjoy one of Birmingham's most famous landmarks. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch and spend the day. If you've never been to Vulcan Park, be sure to also look for two Traditional caches hidden there: "Back on Top Again"(GCJ2J3) and "CACHE IN Two"(GC18YFR). Enjoy!

REQUIRED Questions:
1) Vulcan Park sits on Red Mountain, known for a large 35-foot vein of Iron Ore called the _________________ .

2) Inside the front entrance to the museum (visible from outside) is the large "Wall of Iron" showing examples of what iron can be used to make. Locate the manhole cover that has been split in half. What letter and date are shown on the lower half of the cover?

3) Etched into the pavement outside of the museum is a map of the cities and highways surrounding Vulcan and Birmingham. Also depicted are white circular markers representing Industrial Sites. How many Industrial Sites are represented in the map?

4) Vulcan stands upon a 124-foot high pedestal. How many sides (what shape) is the pedestal tower?

BONUS Question! (not required to receive credit for the cache)
To get to the top observation area, you can either use the elevator, or take the steps. How many steps are in the tower? (No asking the volunteer for the answer!)

PHOTO Requirement:
Take a photo of yourself, your GPS or a personal item somewhere in the park and post it in your log. Bonus points for photos at the top of the observation tower!
