Geocache Description:

A quick virtual while picking somebody up, or when you just arrive in our beautiful city.

The international terminal

The new international terminal was opened on October 31, 2016. This nearly doubled the capacity of the airport, which was much needed. This terminal is part of the $2 billion Airport Development Project which included a new 14,000 ft runway, the longest in Canada.

The design of the building maximizes the capture of natural light, which reduces the need for artificial light — so it also reduces how much energy the building uses. Rainwater and snowmelt are collected and then filtered, stored and used for flushing toilets. This is also the first airport in Canada that has a geothermal system for heating and cooling. The Calgary Airport Authority estimates that these improvements will result in 27 per cent less power consumption and 52 per cent less water consumption.

Question
  1. Make your way to the posted coordinates. From this location, you will see a number written in a blue circle. This number will be [AB]. From here, please make your way to the arrivals hall on the lower level.

Artworks at the airport

There are many pieces of art in the post-security area, depicting all that makes Canada great are everywhere. This virtual requires you to pay attention to the ones just outside the arrivals area of the international terminal. If you're on a domestic flight, the international arrivals is just a short walk over from the domestic arrivals.

Break Away

The iconic Break Away statue, by Robert Keith Spaith, was first placed in the arrivals area of the old terminal, but with the finishing of the international terminal it has been moved to just outside the arrivals hall of the international terminal.

According to the sculptor's website, the objective was to create a sculpture about Calgary, its physical character, its spirit, essence and style using the horse as metaphor. As a symbol the horse is universally synonymous with energy. Collectively the horses represent the Rocky Mountains, a connection to Calgary 's western horizon. The carousel-like motion and arrangement of the horses is inviting. Directionally, these horses have the strength, spirit and maturity to continually run into the wind. They evoke the spirit of risk and optimism that makes Calgary unique and original.

Question
  1. Near the hoof of the last horse are the sculptors initials and a marking. Count the total number of lines in the MARKING (the Y counts as a single line) [C]

The Glacier Wall

This 220 feet long work of art is a representation of the mountains, forest and rivers. All the textures were handcrafted by the glass artist Michel Mailhot.

Question
  1. In the middle of the display you'll find two plaques. One with the name of the artwork, the other with a quote from Michel Mailhot, the creator. Take the last word of the first line of the quote (the italic part) [DEFGH]

Sure-footed

One of the animals on the Sure Footed display.

Right beside the Glacier Wall is an art display called "Sure-Footed" by local artist Jeff de Boer. If you just came through the baggage area you have seen similar styled animals there. His wireframe style is very recognizable and there is a big elk, a family of lynx, a beaver and a bighorn sheep in the baggage area as well as a Canadian goose, all before you leave the secure area.

Question
  1. How many animals are turned to the left? [K]
