The Westport Maritime Museum is located on the former sight of the Coast Guard Station. Built in 1939 the main structure has three stories, six gables, a watchtower with widows walk and two foot thick basement walls. In fact, the main structures are registered as historic buildings with the state of Washington. The museum depicts life in the early days on the South Beach. You can see displays that include the Coast Guard, rescue operations, area shipwrecks and the whaling and fishing industries. Cranberry harvesting and logging tools are also on display. The museum is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and there is a small fee if you wish to explore inside. The cache however, can be found everyday, and there is no need to go inside.
There are two long glass buildings that house a variety of ocean and marine artifacts. Most impressive are some skeletons of marine mammals, such as a Menke whale, California Sea Lion and Harbor Porpoise. The posted coordinates will take you to another--a yearling gray whale named Wauna, found in Henderson Bay in Puget Sound, presumably hit by a large ship. There you will see a metal sign on the floor under the mouth of Wauna. TO LOG THIS CACHE, simply message me the date at the top of the sign. To keep this fair for all, do not post the answer in your log or include it in a picture. I hope you enjoy this cache, and the sights and sounds of Westport.
