Geocache Description:

This cache is available DAWN TO DUSK , seven days a week. The visitor center is open from 9 AM till 4 PM. In the visitor center there is an electronic battle map program describing the 1862 battle of Gaines Mill and the 1864 battle of Cold Harbor. There is also a gift shop and book store should you chose to go inside. Close by sites include Cold Harbor National Cemetery, Garthright House, and Gaines Mill Battlefield, should you chose to also visit those while you are in the area.

The Battle of Cold Harbor, the final battle of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign during the American Civil War, is remembered as one of American history's bloodiest, most lopsided battles. Thousands of Union soldiers were slaughtered in a hopeless frontal assault against the fortified troops of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Grant said of the battle in his memoirs, "I have always regretted that the last assault at Cold Harbor was ever made. I might say the same thing of the assault of the 22nd of May, 1863, at Vicksburg. At Cold Harbor no advantage whatever was gained to compensate for the heavy loss we sustained."

The battle caused a rise in anti-war sentiment in the Northern States. Grant became known as the "fumbling butcher" for his poor decisions. It also lowered the morale of his remaining troops.

Congratulations NPGLENN for being the FTF!!!!!
