I was delighted to have been awarded one of the virtual rewards as a worthy cache owner in 2017 and have chosen to use this opportunity to promote the fantastic North Cornish coastline. There are of course many worthy contenders for this cache, but I have chosen a small lookout point, commanding a lovely view over Bude's beaches, called Chapel Rock.
Chapel Rock, on the harbour breakwater, is all that remains from the days when Bude was just a chapel on a rock, where a bede, or holy man, lit lamps to guide ships in from Cornwall's most treacherous coast.
The first Breakwater was constructed in 1819 to protect the Bude Canal, but was destroyed by a storm in 1838. The present structure dates from 1839-43, and was built by George Casebourne, engineer to the Bude Harbour & Canal Company. The low wall with its sloping seaward side stands only 4 ft above the high water mark of Spring tides.
To be able to claim this virtual, you do need to be able to climb up the steps to the top of the rock, but you are rewarded with a great view back over Summerleaze Beach and along the coastline in both directions.
Whilst visiting Chapel Rock, make the following observations.
(1) You will obviously be above sea level, but approximately how many feet is the elevation?
(2) The Great British Bollard company have their emblem on the posts on the platform at the top, but on how many posts?
(3) There are several steps up to the top of the rock, not including the ground level of the breakwater nor the platform at the top of the rock, how many steps are there?
Photographs, although optional, are welcomed, particularly of the coastline, as it will be great to see the impact that all different weathers have on the views.
