History of the Legislature
The legislature's location was selected shortly after Edmonton was confirmed as the provincial capital by the first session of the Legislature in 1906. Over a period of six years between the 1907 - 1913, the legislature was constructed. Considered to be an overly extravagant structure for such a new province, the Legislature Building was built at a cost of $1.25 million, but due to foundational issues due to quicksand, the cost increased to $2 million by the end of the project.
Materials used in construction were brought into Edmonton from a variety of places. The basement, first storey exterior and front steps are of a granite shipped from Vancouver Island. The rest of the Legislature Building's exterior, with the exception of the massive columns of the front portico, is constructed of yellowish-brown Paskapoo sandstone obtained from Calgary's Glenbow Quarry.
During the tour you will see many interesting items including the replica mace, portraits of past Lieutenant Governors and Premiers, statues of famous Albertans, and plaques of Albertan's lost in past wars.

To visit this cache you will be required to go on free tour which is offered 362 days a year (no tours Christmas Day, New Years Day, and Good Friday). Please visit the website for the legislature for up-to-date information and frequency of the tours as they vary throughout the year.
