Just lately, I have been visiting Kuala Lumpur a lot. I don't live there, but I take the 2-hour train ride from Ipoh once or twice a week, to play in an ensemble and to take cello lessons. I carry or wheel my cello around the train stations and shopping centres, and sometimes don't even manage to do any geocaching while dragging around the enormous instrument! Last time I was there, I saw a guitarist busking in the station, so I decided it was time to combine my two hobbies, with some of my own busking.
Now, I wondered, what programme of music would I play if I was to do some busking? I had a look and have picked a somewhat ambitious programme of pieces to play on my cello. I'll need a piano accompaniment for most of the pieces, except that odd Kodaly Sonata, which, strangely, is for a cello solo. After two little tunes and three full sonatas, I think I'll be exhausted, so I have asked my flautist friend to complete the programme with one final little tune on the flute. And we'll have an intermission, as I think I'll be needing a break! This is an even bigger performance than my grade 8 exam pieces! So, here is the programme we have chosen for our busking in Sentral Station:
Frederik Chopin, Polonaise Brilliante in C Major
Zoltan Kodaly, Sonata for Cello Solo (1915)
CamilleSaint-Saens Cello Sonata No. 1 in C Minor
INTERMISSION
Antonin Dvorak, Humoresque
Julius Rontgen, Cello Sonata No 2 in A Minor
Wilhelm Popp, Polonaise
I do hope you come along to Sentral Station, and if you don't catch me there busking with my cello, you might at least find a geocache, and with any luck, there might be someone busking with their guitar.
