This cache consists of a small white circular snap-top plastic container (approx 6cm tall by 6cm diameter) containing a geocaching declaration in both Greek and English, and a small log book. Please bring a pen or pencil for signing.
The cache is hidden by the natural freshwater spring beneath the church of Agios Athanasios which is in a beautiful gorge filled with plane trees below the hill of Ano Syros.
First references to a chapel on the site date to the 17th Century, though it is believed that the original building was far older. The current church dates to 1947 and was built to replace the older building which collapsed the previous year. Old stone troughs by the spring are a reminder of the days when women would wash their laundry at the site.
Today, it is still quite common for local people to come and fill large containers with spring water for drinking and cooking. The yard by the spring is a location for many cultural events on Syros. When you visit the site to find this cache, please taste the spring water for yourself, and let us know your opinion of its quality in your logging comment.
