His Royal Majesty, Mahidol Adulyadej, the Prince of Songkla (1 January 1892 – 24 September 1929) was the father of two kings; HRM, King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII) and HRM, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) of Thailand. He was also the grandfather of Thailand’s current king, HRM, King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun (Rama X)
He was also regarded as the father of modern medicine and public health of Thailand. Deeply compassionate about his people and the state of medical care in his country, he did a lot to advance the cause of health care in Thailand.
Now, Prince Mahidol of Songkla is honored as the namesake of the institution at this site, and is memorialized by this monument. The institution’s motto is a quote from His Majesty; “Our soul is for the benefit of mankind."
