Geocache Description:

Part of the Blufflands-Root River Valley you see before you is situated in the driftless area of one of the most interesting geologic regions of Minnesota. The driftless area was untouched by the most recent glacial advances, so this area is primarily a remnant of receding ancient seas. However, as the glaciers receded over 10,000 years ago, torrents of melt water poured into streams and rivers, carving deep rugged valleys within the surrounding bluffs. From this point you can see these steep wooded valleys, or coulees, connecting the flat agricultural areas with the Root River Valley below. Multiple bluffs, primarily composed of limestone, can also be seen surrounding these valleys as far as the eye can see. Enjoy the nice view of the quaint town of Rushford below, but keep in mind how this beautiful sight was the result of the untouched driftless area and the torrents of glacial melt water that carved its signature into these bluffs! Visit in the fall when the leaves are changing color for an especially breathtaking view!

To get credit for this earth cache, answer the following:

1. Looking from west to east, how many distinct valleys do you see between the bluffs?

2. Do you think this bluff you are standing on is about the same height as those you can see surrounding the valley below? Why or why not?

3. Why do you think the composition of the bluffs is primarily limestone? (Hint: Think about what remnants the receding ancient seas left behind.)

4. Drive up next to the tower (the highest point of this bluff). From the road, take an altitude reading. Then,in the town of Rushford, take an altitude reading at the Root River State Trail parking lot. By calculating the difference in altitude, state the height of the bluff.
