[ITA] CHIESA DI SAN LORENZO

È verosimile che dove ora si trova la chiesa parrocchiale di San Lorenzo sorgesse il monastero, o meglio, il priorato benedettino di Clonza. Numerosi documenti e pergamene, con datazioni che partono dal secolo XI, relativi a donazioni e vendite, ne attestano sicuramente la presenza. Il priorato benedettino e il toponimo stesso di Clonza scomparvero nel nulla tra il XIII e il XV secolo, così come scomparvero anche due importanti castelli appartenuti ai conti di Biandrate e la terra di Megolo si ridusse a piccoli gruppi di case senza storia, come è attestato nei documenti datati dal ‘400 in poi. La causa di questo improvviso e rapido decadimento di Megolo era stata la distruzione dell’antica Megolo ad opera delle acque del ‘Riale dell’Inferno’, probabilmente intorno al XIV secolo.

Del preesistente priorato non è rimasto che il tronco del campanile, con le bifore e gli eleganti capitelli romanici, risalenti alla metà del XII secolo. Si tratta di una struttura quadrata in cui i piani antichi sono i primi due: il primo piano ha feritoie, il secondo invece ha bifore. Il terzo piano, cioè la cella campanaria, è frutto di una sopraelevazione posteriore. L’attuale struttura della chiesa è molto posteriore e risale invece al XVI secolo.

[ENG] CHURCH OF ST LAWRENCE

It is likely that the monastery, or rather, the Benedictine priory of Clonza once stood where the parish church of St Lawrence is now standing. Many documents and parchments dating from the 11^th century and relating to donations and sales definitely attest to its existence. The Benedictine priory as well as the place name Clonza itself disappeared into thin air between the 13^th and 15^th centuries, just as also did two important castles belonging to the earls of Biandrate. Megolo and its surrounding lands were reduced to small groups of houses with no history, as attested by documents dating back to the 15^th century onwards. The sudden and rapid decay of Megolo came as a consequence to the destruction of the old town by the waters of the ‘Inferno’s River’, probably around the 14^th century.

All that remains of the pre-existing priory is the section of the bell tower with its double-arched windows and elegant Romanesque capitals dating back to the mid-12^th century. It is a square structure in which the first two levels are the oldest: the first level has loopholes, whereas the second has double-arched windows instead. The third level, that is the belfry, is the result of a later addition. The current building of the church is more recent and dates back to the 16^th century.
