Une classification des lacs peut se faire sur le type d'événement géologique qui a présidé à leur formation :
- lacs océaniques, c'est-à-dire des restes d'anciens océans séparés des autres mers, par exemple la mer Caspienne, voire la mer Noire pendant les périodes glaciaires ;
- lacs tectoniques, dus à l'effondrement de portions de la croûte terrestre, comme le lac Tanganyika, le lac Malawi et le lac Victoria ;
- lacs volcaniques, formés dans une caldeira ou un volcan actif (lac acide) :
- lacs de cratère comme le lac Albano, le lac de Nemi ou le Barombi-mbo,
- lacs polycratères ou intercratères, comme le lac de Bolsena ou le lac de Bracciano ;
- lacs alluvionnaires, quand un cours d'eau, par exemple le Brenta en Vénétie (Italie), rencontre des dépôts alluvionnaires sur son cours, formant ainsi le lac de Levico et le lac de Caldonazzo ;
- lacs glaciaires, dus à l'érosion glaciaire, comme les lacs des régions préalpines ; c'est l'exemple des Cent lacs en Italie ;
- lacs sous-glaciaires, situés sous des glaciers, comme le lac subglaciaire de Vostok47 ;
- lacs pro-glaciaires, quand le lac est situé devant et alimenté par un glacier ;
- lacs de verrou morainique, quand les matériaux transportés et déposés par les glaciers forment un barrage : La moraine est un empilement de blocs, galets, cailloux et farine glaciaire véhiculés par un glacier et qui se retrouve à ses abords;
- lacs karstiques, dus à des phénomènes d'érosion en milieu calcaire et souvent très petits ;
- lacs de déflation, dus à l'érosion par les vents, tels ceux du Languedoc (en France) ;
- lacs artificiels, créés par des ouvrages construits par l'homme, souvent des lacs de barrage pour la production hydroélectrique, par exemple le lac de Serre-Ponçon (en France).

A classification of the lakes can be made on the type of geological event driving their formation:
- oceanic lakes, ie the remains of ancient oceans separated from other seas, eg the Caspian Sea and even the Black Sea during glacial periods;
- tectonic lakes, due to the collapse of portions of the earth's crust, such as Lake Tanganyika, Lake Malawi and Lake Victoria;
- volcanic lakes, formed in a caldera or active volcano (acid lake):
- crater lakes such as Lake Albano, Lake Nemi or Barombi-mbo,
- poly-crateric or inter-crater lakes, such as Lake Bolsena or Lake Bracciano;
- alluvial lakes, when a stream, for example the Brenta in Veneto (Italy), encounters alluvial deposits on its course, thus forming Lake Levico and Lake Caldonazzo;
- glacial lakes, due to glacial erosion, such as lakes in pre-Alpine regions; this is the example of the Cent lacs in Italy;
- sub-glacial lakes, located under glaciers, such as the subglacial lake of Vostok;
- pro-glacial lakes, when the lake is located in front and fed by a glacier;
- moraine "lock" lakes, when the materials transported and deposited by the glaciers form a dam: The moraine is a stack of blocks, pebbles and glacial flour transported by a glacier and which is found at its surroundings;
- karstic lakes, due to erosion phenomena in calcareous environments and often very small;
- deflation lakes, due to wind erosion, such as those in Languedoc (France);
- artificial lakes, created by man-made structures, often dam lakes for hydroelectric production, for example the Serre-Ponçon lake (in France).
