Geocache Description:

Getting to Peaks Island is the most challenging part - after that, this is a typical roadside cache.  Take your own vessel, or the ferry from Portland, as most do...  The island is a mile loop along the paved road and is easy to walk.  It's often much cooler and windier here.  Wear bugspray and check for ticks. Please be respectful of private property and wildlife and help keep the island clean. Peaks is an amazing adventure all its own - enjoy!

One of many Peaks Island Pirate Caches, this one takes you to a breathtaking view from the backshore and a glorious place for a picnic. (We do a lot of picnicking when we cache...) From this place, WW2 submarine nets were spread across Hussey Sound to Long Island (to the NE) to protect the warships of the North Atlantic fleet that were stationed in Casco Bay.  The large house down the road built on top of 30ft. concrete walls (called Big Daddy) was the machine house for opening and closing these gates against German U-boats. The cache is hidden in the cragged rocks - be sure to hide it well when you leave this very exposed spot! Good luck, Matey! ~ Winter Pirate
