[ITA] ANZOLA E LA CHIESA DI SAN TOMMASO
Il piccolo paese di Anzola, che divenne nel 1864 Anzola d’Ossola per distinguerlo da altre Anzole, sorge sulla sponda destra del fiume Toce ed è già presente in documenti che risalgono all’anno 1000. Già possedimento del vescovo di Novara, passò poi sotto i conti di Biandrate, sotto il comune di Novara e poi sotto i Visconti di Milano.
Pare che il nome derivi da una piccola ansa che il fiume Toce forma vicino al paese, mentre alle sue spalle si erge il monte Massone che sicuramente contribuisce a creare un clima molto freddo in inverno, anche perché in questo periodo il sole non riesce ad illuminare le case.
La parrocchiale è la chiesa di San Tommaso: è l'unico edificio di pregio rimasto nel paese del periodo medioevale. È ancora individuabile la matrice romana dell'edificio di culto, anche se successivi e numerosi restauri ne hanno sostanzialmente alterato l'originale disegno. La chiesa originariamente era dipendente dalla Pieve di San Vincenzo di Vergonte e successivamente dalla vicina chiesa di Premosello Chiovenda; venne eretta parrocchiale nel 1063. Grazie a questo riconoscimento, gli abitanti e un filantropo dell'epoca edificarono un massiccio campanile la cui costruzione ebbe termine nel 1924. La festa patronale ricorre il 21 dicembre.

[ENG] ANZOLA AND THE CHURCH OF ST THOMAS
The small town of Anzola, which in 1864 became Anzola d’Ossola to distinguish it from other towns named Anzola, lies on the right bank of the river Toce and it is featured already in documents dating back to the year 1,000 AD. Already owned by the bishop of Novara, it then came under control of the earls of Biandrate, of the municipality of Novara and eventually of the House of Visconti from Milan.
It seems that the name originates from a small meander that the river Toce forms near the town, while behind this stands mount Massone, which surely contributes to creating a very cold climate in winter, especially because during this period the sun is not able to reach the houses in the valley.
The parish church is devoted to St Thomas and it is the only fine building left in town from the Medieval period. Its Romanesque imprint is still noticeable nowadays, even if the many later restorations have substantially changed the original design. Originally, the church was under the authority of the parish church of St Vincent in Vergonte and later on, under that of the nearby church of Premosello Chiovenda. It eventually became an independent parish church in 1063. Thanks to this acknowledgement, the inhabitants together with a philanthropist of that time built a solid bell tower whose construction was completed in 1924. The Patronal Feast is celebrated on 21st December.
