Elk are also referred to as "wapiti", a Shawnee word meaning "white rump". Elk breed in the fall. Male bulls gather cows and calves into small groups called harems. Bulls will wallow in mud to coat themselves with urine “perfume” to attract cows. They can dig a hole in the ground, in which they urinate, and then roll their body in the mud. The urine soaks into their hair and gives them a distinct smell which attracts cows. They also bugle and rub trees, shrubs and the ground with their antlers to attract cows and intimidate other bulls. Bulls aggressively guard their harems from other bulls, and sometimes wage violent battles for them.
