Probably the most famous snowy owl is Hedwig from the Harry Potter series, but did you also know that the snowy owl is the official bird of Quebec? Male snowy owls are almost all white, and the females have more bits of black. Juvenile (young) snowy owls have black feathers that turn white as they mature. The snowy owls’ legs and toes are heavily feathered to protect them from the severe cold in the Arctic tundra regions in which they typically live. Lemmings are the usual prey of the snowy owl, and an adult owl can eat three to five lemmings per day, or up to 1600 in one year! A group of owls has many different names including: a bazaar, a glaring, a parliament, a stooping or a wisdom of owls.
