Snow leopards are native to the snowy highlands of central Asia with more than 60% of the world’s population of the cats living in China. The long fluffy tail helps in many ways: it helps with the animal’s balance as it negotiates mountain ledges, and the thick fur acts as a muffler to shield its nose and mouth in the harsh, cold climates. (It’s likely helpful in Manitoba’s winters as well!) Snow leopards tend to be solitary animals and have home ranges up to 1000 square kilometres. They have large nostrils to help them get air in the Himalayan Mountains. They can easily jump 15 metres and take down an animal three times their weight. This endangered cat is not one you want to mess with… but you don’t have to worry. They will likely stay away from you!
