Geocache Description:

With a lovely view over the village of Helperby, this bench was dedicated a very popular man who passed away a few years ago. This was one of his favoutire spots and he would walk up here most days.

Carved from the frame of an old barn, you can see the name 'Dennis' carved into the back of this old seat. Although its hard to see now, the date 1788 was carved into the seat section at the opposite end to Dennis' name. This was original graffiti carved into the beam when it was part of the original barn.

Next the the red gate to your right as you sit in the seat is a large lump of concrete. This is all that remains of an anti-aircraft position setup on this high ground during world war 2. It was part of a trio of guns to defend against German aircraft that tried to attack the bomb dump located in Brafferton woods further down the hill.
