Please note that this is a hike, albeit a moderate one, within the Maitland Coastal Nature Reserve. The reserve is in Maitland Rd and parking is available near the entrance to the reserve. (S: 33°58’43.63’’ E: 25°18’45’’)
MAITLAND COASTAL NATURE RESERVE
The reserve covers about 150ha and was established in 1975. It contains three trails: SIR PEREGRINE (3KM), IGOLOMI (4KM) and DE STADES (9KM).
An old wagon trail meanders through the reserve and is the starting point of all three trails. The track was used to access lead mines situated on nearby properties. The mining did not prove viable but was of historic significance as it was one of the earliest attempts at mining in the Cape Colony.
Flora is represented by Coastal dune forest and is conserved in the reserve. Numerous common plants are also widely represented: Wild Olive (Olea Europa), White Milkwood (Sideroxlon Inerme), Cape Cranberry (Dovyalis Rhamnoides), Outeniqua Yellowwood (Podocarpus Falcatus) and Spike Thorn (Maytenus Heterophylla).
Fauna is represented by small buck species such as Blue Duiker, Bush Buck and Bushpigs. Reptiles, arachnids and birds are also plentiful.
The abundant bird life in the area is worth mentioning as you may have the opportunity of seeing Knysan Loerie, Speckled Mousebird, Southern Boubou, Cape Robin, Cape White Eye, Double Collared Sunbirds and the possibility of seeing a Fish Eagle near the sea.
DE STADES TRAIL
The 8km trail runs through a magnificent part of the reserve. It provides magnificent views of Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay and Maitland Dunes. Take note that no dogs are allowed and good walking shoes are required. Bring drinking water.
The small container has place for swag but please handle it with care. Please replace it as found. It is located just off the path. There is a FTF reward located under the container.
