Downtown Danville Historical Series #3 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Lnrrygby: I have to remove this one because there have been safety issues concerning parts of the building’s facade falling off. I wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt geocaching here.

I will hide another soon to make the series complete again.

Geocache Description:

Congratulations to DreadPirateWestley on being the FTF!

This is part three of a 6 cache series focused on the history of Danville and was created in conjunction with the City of Danville's Historic Preservation Commission. All sites have received permission to place caches. Please be respectful of these places and CITO if you can.

This cache will take you to the front of Danville's Bresee's Tower.

Originally built as the First National Bank in 1918, Bresee Tower is the 12-story unique structure that defines Danville, IL. The building stands on the site of the Lincoln & Lamon Law Offices where Abraham Lincoln practiced law in Danville while traveling on the Eighth Judicial Circuit.

Mundie and Jensen were the architects of this classic revival-style building. World War I steel shortages forced the change from a steel skeletal structure to reinforced concrete. White terre cotta ornamentation is used throughout. Each floor is 25' by 103', and two passenger elevators serve all floors.

Around the corner from ground zero is a plaque that states: "Abraham Lincoln occupied offices on this site while practicing law in the Eighth Judicial District from 1847-1859."
