Geocache Description:

First in a series of caches highlighting the art of Norfolk's Chrysler Museum, One Memorial Place, Norfolk, VA 23510. The Chrysler Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday from Noon to 5 pm. Admission is Free. Website: www.chrysler.org. The Mace may be seen in Gallery 209 at the museum.

The mace was originally a weapon of offense, carried into battle by princes and medieval bishops. During the Middle Ages, the mace became more elaborate and by the 14th century had become a symbol of lawful authority carried by city mayors and college rectors. .

Symbolizing the political birth of the city of Norfolk in the colonial era, the Norfolk Mace was presented to the city in 1753 by Robert Dinwiddie (1693-1770), then Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. It was made by the London silversmith Fuller White. The mace has remained in Norfolk since 1753. It is the only municipal mace in the USA still retained by the city for which it was commissioned. In January 1776, the mace and important documents were buried in a garden in Kemps Landing to protect them from the British invasion. During the Civil War, Colonel William Lamb, of the Confederate Army concealed it beneath the library fireplace in his house at 420 Bute Street. Although the house was occupied by Union troops, the mace was not discovered. After the war Lamb returned it to the city, and in 1989, the Norfolk Mace was transferred to the care of the Chrysler Museum of Art.

The Mace is made up of 10 interlocking sections of silver held together by a central wood support made from a broom handle. The straps forming the crown have been much damaged and repaired as have the fleur-de-lis. For its age and what it has been through, it is in remarkably good condition. The mace weighs 104 oz. The head of the mace, its single largest piece, is surmounted by an open-work crown, bearing the emblems of England, Scotland, France and Ireland during the reign of George II (1683-1760). Shown growing from a single stem are the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, France's fleur-de-lis surrounding the rim of the cup, and the harp of Ireland--signifying the Irish herald. The crowned center of the mace supports a globe or orb, above which is a cross. The staff of the mace is ornamented with alternating leaves, scrolls and spirals. Around the base of the cup are engraved inscriptions.

The Norfolk Mace is on loan to the Chrysler Museum from the City of Norfolk.
