This cache has been placed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the battle for hill 70. This battle was the first time during WW I that Canadians fought under Canadian command. They won, earned 6 Victoria Crosses at the cost of 6000 young Canadians killed and wounded.
The grid reference takes you to the steps of a memorial to Hill 70 in a beautiful park . The original memorial was dedicated 06 Nov 1925.
The current memorial is the end result of a farm family from the area taking a trip to France and seeing how they maintained their memorials took one look at the old memorial (beaten up by time and neglect) and Euniice told Don “This is a disgrace!” and must be fixed. Thanks to lot of hard work Don and the Lions Club created the current Memorial which was re dedicated 16 Sep 2012.
By reading the stores on the two marble tablets in front of the memorial you will be able to answer some simple questions to determine the final grid reference
After 100 years, Thanks to the members of the Prince of Wales armory, Kingston, ON there is now a Canadian Memorial to the Battle of Hill 70 near Lens, France. So now there are two.
