TRIBUTES17—The Beavers Binary BrainBuster Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Nothereeither: Sorry, but the work in the area seems to be continuing indefinitely. Talked with one of the guys who supervises and he said the fences won't be removed until the work is finished and accepted by the county and VDOT. That might be sometime next year.

Geocache Description:

How many of you have noticed how quiet things haven’t been lately?  That’s because besides all the developments going in and road improvements the Hexadecimal Hippos have gotten together with the Binary Beavers and have been working hard on a surprise—besides all those cute little beavopotamuses. They’ve come up with a new and improved version of The Beavers Binary BrainBuster (Cache Not Here).

It has been a quite a spring for the Beavers, building dams, chewing on trees, while the hippos have been wallowing close by in the mosquito infested mud; generally being busy as can be.  Since everyone needs a break from the daily grind, they all got together and came up with a new challenge for the local cachers.

It is simple really, just solve the puzzle below and head out to the coordinates. The cache is there waiting for you.

And just to help keep things simple and not confuse you too much, the Beavers decided to only use ones and zeros along with some hexadecimal thrown in for the puzzle. Wasn't that nice of them?  Here are the coordinates:

Whoa you say!  That’s a lot of ones and zeros for just some purported coordinates.  Well believe it or not the sneaky animals used something called Huffman encoding to arrive at the above.  This results an 80% reduction in the binary representation of the encoded message.

In their giddy rush to put this puzzle together they forgot to shred the below information which was found fluttering around the WMI site over on Moran Road.  It is crucial to finding the cache:

6: 90, 7: 64, 2: 38, 4: 31, 5: 29, 0: 22, 9: 19, e: 16, 8: 10, 3: 8, d: 7 (8), f: 5, 1: 4 (2), c: 3 (2), a: 2 (1), b: 1

Good Luck!

Make sure you take note of the three letter code on the container. You will need it (it is the letter L) to find the series bonus cache: TRIBUTES17: The Bonus Finale .

Tested and verified solvable by Serrabou—regrettably with the wrong coordinates, so he can’t endorse the new puzzle.

March 25, 2018: I have added parking coordinates for ZippyFinn since she apparently doesn’t do caches without parking coordinates. You can park there if you want or if you’re like most goecachers, you can probably find a parking spot within 200’ of the final.

Congratulations to Gaiter Man for the FTF and for persevering the wrong coordinates to eventually determine I had made a mistake in the coordinates—hey they were only off by one digit. For that he rates a T4.
