Negeri Sembilan State Museum is located along Jalan Sungai Ujong, Seremban, close to the Seremban Interchange on the North-South Expressway. If you are keen to learn more about the history of Negeri Sembilan as well as architectural and cultural heritage of this unique Malaysian state, do pay a visit to the exhibits within. The buildings here sport the distinctive styles of Minangkabau architecture, with its buffalo-horn shaped roofs, and this is a style of traditional Malay building that is not often seen elsewhere in Malaysia.
Within the compound of the museum, there a few historical artifacts of note:
Ampang Tinggi Palace
This palace was built during the reign of Yamtuan Udin, the fifth Yang Di-Pertuan Besar at Ampang Tinggi, Kuala Pilah. The palace dimension is 66.5 feet by 23.5 feet. The walls are adorned with delicate woodcraft carvings, which are also distinct to Negeri Sembilan.
Negeri Sembilan House
The original name of this house was "Rumah Undang" and it was built in 1898 at Kampung Air Garam in the town of Mambau. It used to be the house of Tengku Saiyed Ismail, who was the Undang of Sungai Ujong, the old name for the area around Seremban. It was relocated to the present premises in the 1980s and has since being accorded the historical building status by the State Government.
Cannons, Perahu and Steam Engine
A collection of other interesting items that have been uncovered from around Negeri Sembilan are also exhibited around the museum grounds. The cannons here were used in against the Nanning Wars in the southern part of the state in the 19th century, while the steam engine (my favourite exhibit of them all) was uncovered in the forest and dates back to the earliest periods of tin mining in the Linggi Valley during the colonial period.
