Geocache Description:

Where The Hummingbird Rests - Dept

Mount Umunhum dominates the skyline of the south bay, rising up 3,486 feet above sea level and crowned with the distinctive "Cube" the remaining concrete tower of the Almaden Air Force Station, which once sported a large rotating RADAR antenna. The tower is one of the more recognizeable landmarks of the South Bay skyline and Santa Cruz mountains and has been remarked as a comforting sight to South Bay travelers as a sign they are nearly home.
The mountain gets its name from the Ohlone word for "resting place of the Hummingbird". The mountain figures prominently in Native Americans life and spirituality. Among the preserved sights and restoration, a Ceremonial Circle has been built for their use.
Early European settlers held mining claims on the mountain and it hosted the Almaden Air Force station during the Cold War before decommissioning. Thanks to efforts by the Umunhum Conservancy and Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District the mountain top is now open to visitors for the first time in decades.
On September 16, 2017 the summit of Mount Umunhum was opened to the public as a historical, spiritual and scenic location. Bring your camera, please take home your trash - leave only footprints and take only memories.
