Geocache Description:

Roadside cache on Slaaihoek Pass.

As you will have noticed, this road has some extreme speed limits.

From where the pass starts at the trig beacon and towers some 20 kms back, the speed limit for cars progressively reduces from 100kph to 80 to 60 and at this point to 40kph.  For haulage trucks the speed limit is 50kph for the upper part of the pass, and 40kph for this lower section.

There's a good reason for these speed limits.  Most of the traffic on this pass is the hated ore haulage trucks which run 7 days a week, 24 hours per day.  They crawl up and down this pass, and they create a high accident risk especially when visibility is poor and the road is slippery in fog or rain.

Despite all the trucks, this road is in amazing condition with no potholes, and has 95 well signposted constant radius corners.  It's very scenic and a pleasure to drive.

The cache is a magnetic bison tube.

NB: The Slaaihoek Pass road goes all the way through to Vygeboom Dam. Maps don't show the road past the mine, but it's there. Just turn sharp right onto the dirt road just before the security point at the mine entrance, and follow your GPS to the caches.
