The Round house was built in 1834 as a temporary lock up for those arrested for petty crime or drunkeness, where they were held until they were taken before the justices. The round house is not actually round but is a six faced pyramid with a floor space of about 1.8 m square and headroom of about 2.4 m
Limestone quarrying was Wheatley’s main industry, supplying stone for Windsor castle, Oxfords colleges, as well as local houses and cottages.
The Round house was built on the parish stone pits (now the recreation ground) where the parish paupers earned a living by breaking up stones for the parish roads.
