Essendo uno dei maggiori tempi d'età romania in sardegna, appare al visitatore come una imponente basilica per il luogo circostante. Dotata di un bel portale gemino di fattura gotico-catalana, appena entrati si può subito notare il maestoso altare. Si possono osservare i grandi pilastri erigere tutta la costruzione, ma possiamo trovare pilastri anche fuori dalla basilica (luogo dove è stata effettivamente nascosta la cache). Tornando alla basilica, essa sorge su un'area cimiteriale pagano-cristiana e venne avvolta da costruzioni che ospitavano i pellegrini, i figli stessi di Torres che da Sassari si recavano a pregare i loro Santi.
Nei canti e nelle fiorite leggende ricorre spesso la menzione de sas campanas de Portu, le campane di S. Gavino, che un giorno si vuole abbiano suonato anche da sole per avvisare la madre del celebre bandito per onore Don Altare che il figlio era morto. Nasce spontanea la domanda: dove erano alloggiate queste campane, dato che non esiste traccia alcuna di campanile? Il campaniletto a vela esistente fino ai radicali restauri era ben meschina cosa, una superfetazione posteriore, rispetto ai rispettabili campanili delle altre chiese romaniche del Giudicato di Torres.
Al di fuori della basilica, luogo della cache, c'è una colonna con scolpito sopra San Gavino a cavallo. La scultura è stata presa per restauro e al momento è situata dentro la basilica, in continuo restauro.

Being one of the greatest Roman temple in Sardinia, it appears to the visitor as an imposing basilica for the surrounding area. Equipped with a beautiful Gothic-Catalan gemstone portal, you can immediately notice the majestic altar inside. You can see the great pillars erecting all the construction, but we can also find pillars outside the basilica (where the cache was actually hidden). The basilica rises on a Pagan-Christian cemetery site and was wrapped up by pilgrim constructions, who were Torres's own children who came from Sassari to pray to their Saints.
Some singing and flourishing legends often refers to the de sas campanas de Portu, the bells of S. Gavino, which one day want to have also played alone to alert the mother of the famous bandit for honor Don Altar that his son was dead. The question arises spontaneously: where were these bells housed, since there is no trace of bell-tower? The sailboat existing up to the radical restoration was a very small thing, a posterior superfetace, compared to the respectable bell towers of the other Romanesque churches of Giudicato di Torres.
Outside the basilica, cache site, there is a column carved over San Gavino on horseback. The sculpture was taken for restoration and is currently located inside the basilica, in continuous restoration.
