The "Spirit of Flight" statue was erected in 2010 to commemorate the centenary of the first Scottish Internation Aviation Meeting which was held at Lanark Racecourse. It came as a result of public and private donations. The statue was created at a forge near Ratho, Edinburgh. A crowd of 200 people was present when the head of the RAF in Scotland, Air Commodore Richard Atkinson unveiled the statue. The unveiling was rounded off by a flypast of light aircraft and microlights from the nearest airfield, which is at Strathaven.
