Xenops belongs to the family of ovenbirds or Furnariidae.  This large family of birds in the Passeriformes is confined to South America.  These birds are so called because they build an oven-like nest of clay.  This family of ovenbirds should not be confused with the North American ovenbird which is in the Family of warblers, Parulidae.  The genius Xenops consists of 3 species, the Slender-billed xenops, Plain xenops, and Streaked xenops.
