The term labyrinth comes from Greek mythology, where Daedalus built a labyrinth to contain a minotaur caught by Theseus. This first labyrinth was so complex that Daedalus struggled to find his way out after creating it.
Modern labyrinths pose little to no risk of getting lost within, as there is typically a single path leading to the centre and back. They are often used in walking meditation.
You can also find outdoor labyrinths in Vancouver at the Renfrew Ravine Park, the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, and the University of British Columbia (near the Vancouver School of Economics). Some local Anglican churches have indoor labyrinths, including St. Paul's, Christ Church Cathedral, and St. Mary's Kerrisdale.
