Geocache Description:

Elephant Rocks is a sheltered Beach around 15km South West of Denmark.

A popular swimming site and home of a large rock baring the resemblance of a large pachyderm

Elephant Rocks:

Along the eastern side of Elephant Cove, you'll find some rocks that look out of place on the predominantly granitic South Coast of Western Australia. They are fine-grained and dark, suggesting volcanic origins - the remains of a volcanic dyke. The long, straight cove was formed through erosion along this line of weakness.

This, along with the jointed nature of the granite's to the West (the elephants) gives some clue about the formation of the cove and the elephants, and why its two headlands are so long and straight. The bay was most likely formed by a volcanic dike eroding faster than the surrounding granitic rocks.

By definition, basalt is an igneous rock and is the most common volcanic rock type on Earth, being a key component of oceanic crust. Basalt commonly features a very fine-grained or glassy matrix interspersed with visible mineral grains.

What you need to do to claim this EarthCache:

Compulsory Questions:

Optional task:
Take a photo of yourself while at Elephant Rocks.
