During World War II the Achilleon was used as a military hospital for the ill fated fleeing Serbians and the French troops. France took temporary military possession of Corfu to provide a refuge for the Serbians. The tranquil little cemetery, was where 209 French were buried. Many were Zouaves, French colonial troops known for their bravery and distinctive colourful uniforms.
