Geocache Description:

The memorial before you, the West Point Monument,

was built in 1909 as a tribute to African American Veterans

of the Civil War and Spanish American War.

Depicted on this monument is Sergeant William H. Carney.

Sgt. Carney fought in the Civil War with the

54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.

For his act of heroism at Fort Wagner, Carney was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

He was the first African American to receive this award.

The 1989 movie, “Glory” is based on Sgt William Carney.
