What's Special on today?

Events

1386 – The Universität Heidelberg holds its first lecture, making it the oldest German university.
1781 – At Yorktown, Virginia, representatives of British commander Lord Cornwallis hand over Cornwallis' sword and formally surrender to George Washington and the comte de Rochambeau.
1789 – John Jay is sworn in as the first Chief Justice of the United States.
1864 – Battle of Cedar Creek: Union Army under Philip Sheridan destroys a Confederate Army under Jubal Early.
1864 – St. Albans Raid: Confederate raiders launch an attack on Saint Albans, Vermont from Canada. It was a controversial raid from Canada by Confederate soldiers meant to rob banks to raise money and to trick the Union Army into diverting troops to defend their northern border against further raids. Shortly before 3 p.m. the rebels staged simultaneous robberies of the city's three banks. They identified themselves as Confederate soldiers and took a total of $208,000 (US$ 3,190,000 in 2017). The raiders escaped to Canada but the incident served to turn many Canadians against the Confederacy, since they felt that Canada was being drawn into the conflict without its consent.
1933 – Germany withdraws from the League of Nations.
1935 – The League of Nations places economic sanctions on fascist Italy for its invasion of Ethiopia.
1943 – Streptomycin, the first antibiotic remedy for tuberculosis, is isolated by researchers at Rutgers University.
1950 – The People's Republic of China joins the Korean War by sending thousands of troops across the Yalu River to fight United Nations forces.
1950 – Iran becomes the first country to accept technical assistance from the United States under the Point Four Program as proposed by President Harry Truman.
1960 – Cold War: The United States government imposes a near-total trade embargo against Cuba.
1973 – President Richard Nixon rejects an Appeals Court decision that he turn over the Watergate tapes. Nixon's refusal of a congressional subpoena to release the tapes constituted an article of impeachment against Nixon, and led to his subsequent resignation on August 9, 1974.
2013 – At least 105 people are injured in a train crash at the Once railway station in Buenos Aires. Hopefully the train was OK.br />
Birthdays

1850 – Annie Smith Peck, American mountaineer and academic (d. 1935) In 1895 Peck followed in Englishwoman Lucy Walker's footsteps and ascended the Matterhorn, but the accomplishment was overshadowed by what she wore during the climb: a long tunic, climbing boots, and a pair of pants. At the time, women were being arrested for wearing trousers in public, and so Peck's climbing costume not only brought about serious hullabaloo in the press, but also prompted public discussion and debate (for example, in the New York Times) on the question of what women should do and what they can be.
1876 – Mordecai Brown, American baseball player, coach, and manager (d. 1945) Due to a farm-machinery accident in his youth, Brown lost parts of two fingers on his right hand, and in the process gained a colorful nickname “Three-Finger”. He turned this handicap into an advantage by learning how to grip a baseball in a way that resulted in an exceptional curveball. His most productive period was when he played for the Chicago Cubs from 1904 through 1912. During this stretch, he won 20 or more games six times and was part of two World Series championships. Fly the W!
1920 – LaWanda Page, American actress (d. 2002) Best known for her role on Sanford and Son as Aunt Esther (Watch it, Sucker!).
1932 – Robert Reed, American actor (d. 1992) Mr. Brady!
1945 – John Lithgow, American actor
1962 – Evander Holyfield, American boxer and actor
1969 – Trey Parker, American actor, animator, producer, and screenwriter
1980 – Rajai Davis, American baseball player

Deaths

1745 – Jonathan Swift, Irish satirist and essayist (b. 1667)
1897 – George Pullman, American engineer and businessman, founded the Pullman Company (b. 1831) which manufactured railroad cars in the mid-to-late 19th century through the early decades of the 20th century. Trains are cool. 1937 – Ernest Rutherford, New Zealand-English physicist and chemist, Nobel Prize laureate (b. 1871) He came to be known as the father of nuclear physics and conducted research that led to the first "splitting" of the atom in 1917 in a nuclear reaction between nitrogen and alpha particles, in which he also discovered (and named) the proton.
1994 – Martha Raye, American actress and comedian (b. 1916)
2010 – Tom Bosley, American actor (b. 1927)

Today is ” Dress Like a Dork Day ”!

According to multiple calendar holiday sites, today is “Dress Like a Dork Day”. I know it sounds silly but to some people they may not even know that they might be dressing like a dork until they look around and everyone is dressed like them. Or, they might feel like a trend setter.
How do you dress like a Dork?
It’s pretty simple. All you need to do is slick back your hair, get out the plaid polyester pants, hideous shirt, suspenders, white knee socks or mismatched argyle socks and your favorite dickey. Add ginormous rimmed glasses with a bit of masking tape, tuck in the shirt, wrap the fanny pack around your fanny and you are good to go!
Need some inspiration, here’s a few famous characters for tips…

- Anthony Edwards and Robert Carradine both played dorky characters in "Revenge of the Nerds".
- If you’ve ever seen Crispin Glover on the late night shows, his dorky character in the “Back to the Future” films probably wasn’t much of a stretch in real-life!
- Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald played numerous dorky characters in several of John Hughes’ classic movies like “Pretty in Pink”, “Sixteen Candles”, “The Breakfast Club”.
- And of course you can have a debate on which was the most dorky kid of all, Steve Urkel on “Family Matters” or Screech from “Saved by the Bell”!

So if a dork is defined as someone who is out of touch, a social misfit or someone who tends to look "odd or behave ridiculously around others.", then being a geocacher could probably have most of us all ready to go!
