Geocache Description:

Campsie High Church was completed in 1828 from a design by Glasgow architect David Hamilton (who also was also commissioned for the nearby Lennox Castle construction). The gothic building once accommodated around 1600 people and cost approximately £6000. The first foundation stone was placed on June 21st 1827, with the first sermon taking place by Rev. Norman MacLeod in 1829.

The church saw a total of 8 ministers during its operation until Parish was merged with the Trinity Church (which stood on the grounds of the new modern building on the main street) in 1976 and sadly the impressive High Church became disused.

On the 24th of August 1984, the impressive building was set ablaze, causing extensive damage to the roof and interior. In recent years, steps have been taken to preserve and stabilize the building and partially restored the tower (although now a lot shorter and less impressive than its former glory). The clock was replaced and now chimes hourly

Please take time to enjoy the impressive gothic achitecture and stunning views across the Campsies. There is no access to the building itself, however the cemetery can still be accessed and is a popular route for walkers and historians.
