The Agios Georgios Hill, near PASYDY in Nicosia, is a unique archaeological site for so many reasons. It has indeed provided evidence that Nicosia is the missing city-kingdom of Ledroi (Ledra), through discoveries dating back to the Chalcolithic period or the 3rd millennium BC. The findings make it the only archaeological site in Nicosia to extend so far back in time, where the Hellenistic settlement is preserved. It is in fact one of the few Hellenistic settlements to have been excavated in such an extent as in most sites, Roman layers lie on top of the Hellenistic ones thus obstructing any evidence from this period. Ceramics, terracotta and limestone figurines, coins, tools, seeds have revealed the story of the settlement, shedding light on the island’s overall history. So many of these objects are pieces of worship and denote the existence of a shrine. Evidence further points to the fact that people worshiped Aphrodite, Arsinoe, and other deities and in more recent years Agios Georgios. The settlement is organised along parallel (equally spread apart) roads stretching from East to West and it is dissected by a wide central road that extends from the North to the South. Between these roads, excavations revealed rectangular rooms within which the vast amounts of various materials indicate that these were workshops of clay, stone and metal objects and that textile industry was dominant. Most of the objects made here were used in the altar. The earliest architectural remains, is a circular building on the east bank of the river Pedieos, which dates from 2800-2500 BC. Unfolding the various layers, tells the story of the historical and political events, such as the dissolution of the city-kingdoms, the involvement of the island in the wars between the descendants of Alexander the Great and its annexation by the Ptolemies. Despite these events the habitation of the settlement continued. There is in fact evidence of continued habitation from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic periods to the early Roman period. One reason for this extended habitation was the hill top location and the essential water source provided by the nearby river. Further more, its central location between the two vitally important harbour towns of Salamis and Soloi (near Morphou) enhanced its importance as a place of trade and worship. More here.
