We've celebrated or observed all kinds of special days or events. There actually is an Ides of October on the 15th! Julius Caesar was told, "Beward the Ides of March" and we remember what happened to him. October has been a month to look out for, especially those who invest in the stock market. At least we are past the 15th unscathed but the month is not over. So let's forget about all the hype of what "might" happen or has happened in the past and just concentrate on the good, such as:
- 1781 - The war between Britain and its American colonies was effectively ended as British troops surrendered at Yorktown and the song The World Turned Upside Down played. The final peace treaty was signed in Paris on September 3, 1783.
- 1879 - Thomas Edison successfully tested an electric incandescent lamp with a carbonized filament at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, keeping it lit for over 13 hours.
- 1908 - The Model T went on sale for the first time.
- 1990 - East and West Germany were reunited as the Federal Republic of Germany.
- The World Series starts (it used to end in October but this year it will be Nov 1 if it lasts 7 games!).
Anyway, come on out and chew the fat or eschew the fat, if you prefer, and have a good time in spite of October's checkered reputation.
