Geocache Description:

** Cache placed with the kind permission of the Woodland Trust **

The cache containing a few goodies is placed on a tree covered hill which has magnificent views of the surrounding area from at least a couple of viewpoints. There are a couple of entrances to the Coed y Gopa (Gopa Woods) with the easiest route to the cache being up Tan y Gopa Road keeping right towards Rhyd-y-Foel where there is a small parking area at Nant-y-Bella Lodge, near the entrance to the woodland.

Coed y Gopa or Gopa Woods is in Abergele, Conwy, North Wales and has many woodland walks, interesting geology, wildlife and a great viewpoint near the cache which looks out over the Vale of Clwyd and the Clwydian Hill Range. There is also another viewpoint on the right up a small hill at the second bend in the wide pathway you took from the entrance.

The woodland is maintained by the Woodland Trust and more information can be found here - (visit link)
with more history of the woodland here - (visit link)

There is a leaflet and map for the woods if you manage to get one before you visit. It can be viewed here - (visit link)

There are markers to help you find your way around the woodlands but, sadly, a lot of them seem to have been stolen. The bench also had a fabulous backrest carved by a local artisan depicting local views but it was stolen the weekend it was first placed in situ. We hope you will visit the woodland and take nothing but photographs and your memories. Also, if you take something from the cache box please replace it with something decent in its place.

If you have the time at the top of the hill you can visit the site of an ancient iron age hill fort, Castell Cawr (Giant's Castle), built around 750 BC, which was later occupied by the Romans. Present day there isn't much to see except the remaining mounds showing the defensive structure so you need to use your imagination. You can read more about it here - (visit link) (visit link)
