The cache is located near to where the old Gas works used to be. As a child I can remember one of the huge cylindrical containers that contained the gas. There used to be more than one but I think that was before my time! The containers were originally installed in 1859 and enabled the High Street to be lighted with the gas from the Gas Works. The gas works was owned by Watton Gas and Coke Company Ltd. The gas house, that has recently been renovated, used to accommodate the Works Manager. The grass area at the rear of the former gas works was donated to the town by a Mrs Harvey and is now a playing field at the back of the Youth Centre.
