English version

The cycle of rocks. Stonegarden at South Tyrol

The cycle of rocks shows those rock-forming processes that are responsible for the formation of the three large rock groups:

Sedimentary rocks, metamorphites (transformation rocks) and magmatic rocks. The cycle of the rocks was first presented by the Scottish geologist James Hutton, the father of modern geology in 1785. His model is based on observation of nature: rocks weather and are transported and deposited by rivers and winds. The initially loose sediments are covered by subsequent material and thereby solidified to form sedimentary rocks. If these rocks are sunk into the depths, ie exposed to high pressure and temperatures, they are converted, or they are melted. As magmatic rocks, which solidify from such melts, they are led back into the cycle. The motor for this circuit is forces inside the earth, which move plates of the Earth's crust (plate tectonics).

For example, Plates are pressed apart, rock melts can reach the surface and solidify to magmatic rocks. When rocks collide, rocks are stacked on top of each other and exposed to high pressures and temperatures. Metamorphites are formed. The weathering of the mountains provides sedimentary material, which is detached on the continents in the sea. Since the plate tectonics is active everywhere on the earth and keeps the circulation of the rocks in motion, we find the different types of rocks distributed all over the world. This distribution is decisively determined by the geological history of the respective area. Mineral compounds as constituents of all rocks are the hallmarks of this history. They tell us by their appearance or absence, their composition and not by their age, how often and how quickly a rock has passed the cycle of formation, transformation and weathering.

Here at Steingarden the rocks are ordered their actual occurrence in South Tyrol. The lines marked with white gravel correspond to the course of the periadriatic seam (see also infoboard).

The Steingarden has the form of South Tyrol and is designed in the correct north-south orientation.

To log this Earthcache, please answer the following questions, and make an email address to send it to.

1. How many types of ground rock are there? (number 1)

2. Name the first magmatic rock (in brackets) according to Infoboard (word 1)

3. When was this cycle of rocks presented for the first time? (number 2)

4. Name the second transformation rock (metamorphite), given as an example. (word 2)

Now put the answers together as follows: (number 1) (word 1) (number 2) (word 2) @ gmx.de

Example would be: 5Vulkanite1923Gneis @ gmx.de

You can log right away immediatelly and do not have to wait for my answer. If something is not correct, you will NOT get an automatic response.
