Geocache Description:

This cache highlights one of my favourite spots on the trails, the cabin and pond. This cache is located in the newly opened Foote Woods trail system. These trails are open to the public thanks to the generous private land owner. Caches are hidden in Foote Woods with land owner permission.

A little bit of history: My Dad and his Father built the log cabin! Dad says they built it in 1975 when he was 14. In 2017 my Dad did some much needed restoration on the cabin.  He replaced the logs around the bottom and some in the front as well as putting a metal roof on.  Despite rough times, the cabin is still standing and serving as an interesting destination for all sorts of people.

Also of interest, nearby is a foundation of an old home.  Don’t climb in, the stones are collapsing and there is garbage and broken glass.  There is a fresh water spring flowing into the pond nearby and the home owners used it for water before the pond was expanded by my grandfather.

My grandfather used to own the property (it has passed on to my Dad) and has recently upgraded some of the trails by the cabin, building a big new gravel parking lot right beside the cabin. The road into the parking lot still has some wet/muddy spots so use caution if you plan to drive in.  We hope that lots of people can enjoy the trails for years to come.

I have lots of great memories of traveling these trails, visiting the cabin and fishing in the pond. We even built a raft one year and it stuck around for quite a while.

Accessing the cache:  There are several places you can park to access this cache.  There is a gravel firetruck access (Pond Parking) by the pond on Hiltz Rd. and a trail up to the cabin from there.  There is also a road into the cabin off the Burgess Mountain Rd.  You can park near the entrance (Gravel Pit Parking) and walk in, or drive all the way in depending on the time of year and capabilities of your vehicle.  Watch out for mud.  If you want more of a hike you can use Bee Parking.

This is a replacement for another cabin cache: www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC105Z3_log-cabin-surprise

Note: a piece has been removed from the cabin making the hidden hint less applicable, the cache is not the different one. Hopefully we will find a replacement soon and return it to the original condition. The cache has not changed.

Note 2: The original Woodville Hiking Trails are officially closed, please refer to the Foote Woods map for open trails and parking.

Hint: You don’t have to open the door to get this cache, but it is related to door opening.  Might be a tight fit (I can adjust it if people have trouble).  Please replace as found.

Congrats to BoxerBailey and Lobstergirl on the CO FTF. Also, a big thanks to my Dad who helped construct and place this cache.
