Murals in Kiev
During my stay in Kiev in October 2017, I had the chance to explore the city a little bit. I also take part in a short guided tour of the city that focused on the murals that can be found almost everywhere across the city.
When I was walking through the city on my own, I could discover even more of them and so I had the idea to create a multi-cache to show you some of the ones that I found and enjoyed.
Most of the murals in Kiev were created in the course of the project "ArtUnitedUs" which has invited artists from all over the world to paint already more than 150 walls in Kiev. Those murals focus on different ideas and motifs. Some deal with Ukrainian history, traditions or folklore, some focus on more universal themes like peace and community.
Here is a collection of some murals that are worth seeing but that will not be on your path on your way to the cache. You still need to pay some attention to the pictures to find your way to the first mural.

The starting point of this little tour is the Obelisk on Victory Square. On your way, you will have to answer some questions about details of the murals and then fill in the formulas to get to the next stage.
To get to the first mural, just have a look at the pictures above. How many animals (=A) and persons (=B) are shown in the murals?
Mural 1:
N 50° 27.(12xA + 3xB) E 030° 29.(210xA + 14xB)
What a nice view!
There is a red sign attached to the wall of the mural. How many letters are written on it? (=C)
Mural 2:
N 50° 27.(34xC + 2xB) E 030° 30.(2xAxC+ 6xB)
This one is more geometric. How many letters does the complete name of the hotel in front of the mural have? (=D)
Mural 3:
N 50° 26.(56xD + 3xC + 2) E 030° 30.(20xD + 3xA)
What is the colour of the bike? Red (E=8), blue (E=10) or green (E=12)?
Mural 4:
N 50° 27.(14xE) E 030° 30.(80xE + B)
What can you see here? Geometric forms (F=5), an animal (F=10) or a woman with flowers (F=15)?
Mural 5:
N 50° 27.(4xF + 3xC) E 030° 30.(51xF + D - A)
Follow the street and go through the metal door at the coordinates to enter the inner yard. How many white birds can you see in the mural? (=G)
Murals 6 and 7:
N 50° 27.(10xFxG) E 030° 30.(11xAxFxG)
From this point, you can actually see two morals. Look at the one directly in front of you.
How many cars can you see in the foreground that are completely visible and not covered? (=H)
Look a bit further away. There is another mural that shows some birds that are very important in Ukrainian folklore, as I was told. Do you see ravens (I=3), cranes (I=5) or white storks (I=7)?
Mural 8:
N 50° 27.(7xHxI + D + C) E 030° 30.(24xHxI + F - B)
How many children are shown in the mosaics here? (=J)
Mural 9:
N 50° 27.(34xJ) E 030° 30.(100xJ + H)
How many arms does the Cossack archer on the left side of the mural have? (=K)
Mural 10:
N 50° 27.(58xK) E 030° 31.(13xK)
Enter the inner yard and have a look at the mural. It is still unfinished because apparently some nun tipped over some cans of paint because she was not happy about the partial nudity of the man. However, what does he hold in his hand? A sword (L= 14), a flag (L=28) or a hammer (L=42)?
Mural 11:
N 50° 27.(10xL) E 030° 31.(10xL + F)
How many circular holes are in the northern wooden platform near you in this park? (=M) - because the original platform seems to have been demolished, take M= 12
Mural 12:
N 50° 27.(5xM + 2xG) E 030° 31.(24xM)
This is the last mural on your little tour. What is the name of the artist? Find the sum of the values of the letters of his name. (e.g.: A=1, B=2, C=3, etc.) (=N)
Final:
Now that you have collected A to N, you can just add all of them together to get X (A+B+C+ ... + N). Fill in X to get the final coordinates:
N 50° 27.196 - X
E 030° 31.333 - X
The cache is a small orange tupperware box on the floor and protected by metal. The T-rating is due to the hilly landscape of Kiev and the distance of the walk. The cache itself is T1. Make sure you stay in stealth mode so that noone sees you. I hope the cache will survive for long! Please dont upload any pictures of the murals that you found on the way, but feel free to share any other pictures of murals in other parts of the city!
