The Land Trust of North Alabama is celebrating 30 years! To help celebrate, we are placing new geocaches on our 9 preserves. On June 24, 1987 the non-profit incorporation papers were signed to establish the first Land Trust in Alabama. Since that day, we have preserved over 6,200 acres and maintain over 70 miles of trails. If you have geocached in Huntsville, you’ve likely found a geocache on one of our properties BUT did you know it was Land Trust property? We are hoping this “tour” will help you put our face to the properties you know and love and show you what’s in the works to get newly donated or purchased properties ready for public use.
To make things extra special, we are offering a little reward for those that find each of our geocaches. Provided here is a passport under photos you can print and in each geocache you will find a self-inking stamp to use on your passport. When you have at least 5 stamps bring in your passport to our office for our pathtag. Our office is located at 2707 Artie Street Suite 6 Huntsville, AL 35805.
This tour will give you an idea of what’s happening at the Land Trust of North Alabama. We are diligently working to preserve green space in North Alabama for public use now and for future generations.
Our hope is this tour will educate you on what the Land Trust has been doing for 30 years and our plans for the next 30 years.
Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve land was donated by the Terry Family. It is one of our largest Preserves. The Educational Pavilion located near the parking is under construction and is a gift of Toyota, Terry Family and Vulcan. The trails were built by our land stewards and volunteers. This cache is near the spring. Around here you can see parts of a still and the spring and natural amphitheater Enjoy our newest Preserve. This 371 acre nature preserve on Chapman Mountain is located just to the east of Huntsville on HWY 72, will be a gateway to Huntsville and outdoor adventure. Plans for the property include approximately 10 miles of multi-use trails, disc golf course, and group camping sites as well as include a 1,920 square-foot open air facility - Terry Education Pavilion. Through a variety of guided hikes and hands-on outdoor activities, the Land Trust encourages children, adults, and families to experience the incredible wonders of North Alabama’s natural lands. The Land Trust’s current education program, Tuesdays on the Trail, is offered on a weekly basis each summer. However, the Terry Education Pavilion at Chapman Mountain will provide a space for an expanded year-round science and environmental education program. When not in use for education purposes, the structure will be offered on a reservation basis for family, community, and corporate events. The gate will open at sunrise and will close at sunset. If the gate is closed when you leave, a weight sensor will open it for you to exit.
