Geocache Description:

This cache is placed with permission of New River Trail State Park.  With 57 miles of trails,  39 miles of it parallels the New River.  New River Trail State Park is located at 116 Orphanage Drive, Max Meadows, Virginia.  There is a fee for park entry.

GinGin loves to learn about any of the great Virginia State Parks he visits, either for the day or overnight.  From the helpful information you can learn on-line, brochures and information from Park Staff to reading informative signs posted throughout the park, GinGin is always learning more and more with each trip he makes.  GinGin loves, in particular, New River Trail State Park.  There are so many activities you can participate in.  There are multiple accesses to New River Trail, spanning over 57 mies that includes two tunnels, multiple bridges, playgrounds picnic shelters, boat rentals and horse amenities.  Since it covers multiple counties in Virginia, New River Trail State Park has several Park Offices or Contact Stations to help you with questions and information.    Primary use of the trail is hiking, biking and horseback riding.

The central area of New River Trails is Foster Falls, 116 Orphanage Drive, Max Meadows, Virginia.  This is a historic area with buildings and an old lead furnace.  There are also wonderful amenities including boat rental, guided horse rentals, an equestrian area, ampitheater and the Millrace Campground.  The entire length of the trail is listed as "easy", so even good for children.

Located at Foster Falls, near the Gift shop, previously a trail depot, is a Norfolk and Western (N&W) caboose with 518517 written under it.  There is a set of steps you can use to climb to the back of this old caboose and get a good look at it from the rear window.  There are several of these same train cars located throughout different sections of New River Trail.  Norfolk and Western trains used the tracks that ran through this section of Virginia to other points, transporting goods and passengers.

If you are driving, please park your car in the parking lot at the Gift Shop of Foster Falls.

This geocache is a small magnetic hide-a-key container.  You will need to bring your own pen.

You are welcome and encouraged to post photos of your time at New River Trail State Park and any of the great activities you can do while there.

CONGRATULATIONS to Ag-LadyB for being FTF!
