Geocache Description:

Historic Hamilton: Mohawk Trail School Museum

Historic Hamilton will be a series of caches that serve to bring cachers to historic places in and around the City of Hamilton. These caches can be placed by anyone, and are not limited to one CO. If you know of a historic place that you would like to bring people to, feel free to add it to the series!

Cache is a small camo'd lock n lock that has only a logbook. Please bring your own writing instrument to sign the logbook and replace as found. Parking can be found on Bobolink Road or Millwood Place. The public has access to the sidewalk trail that runs between these two roads, however, there are no trespassing signs to the East where the grass begins. For stage 1, you do not have to leave the sidewalk at all.

Stage 1 will bring your in front of the this historic school. Note the 4 digit number on the top front of the building, and divide it by 1000. Add this number to the following meaningless coordinates to get the final, which is less than 1km away: 43 10.975, -079 49.906

The old Mohawk Trail School is a prime example of a nineteenth century one-room Ontario schoolhouse. The school began life as S.S. # 5 Barton, built in 1882. It continued in operation serving area students in Hamilton classroom until as recently as 1966. A newer school called Mohawk Trail School was built beside the one-room structure in the 1950s. That school has since been demolished and replaced by housing. In 1967, the "official" organization of Hamilton's public elementary teachers, the Hamilton Teachers Council, undertook to renovate the old school, now also called Mohawk Trail.

Donated to the board by the elementary teachers’ union and converted into a museum as part of Canada’s Centennial celebrations in 1967, it originally stood at the corner of Mohawk Road West and West 15th Street. It served as a location for area primary and junior students to visit and to learn about education from another era. The school, is a museum today under the auspices of the Educational Archives and Heritage Centre and is maintained, in coordination with the HWDSB, by volunteers.

In 2014, it  moved to this location, near the rear of the Hamilton public board’s Education Centre across from Limeridge Mall.
